Hi, my name is Matt Lagan and I am an internationally acclaimed saxophonist. In the last two years I have toured twelve countries in five continents, mostly with the Shuffle Demons from Toronto Canada. This year I was recognised as an Emerging Jazz Artist by the Toronto Art’s Council and in 2017 I was the winner of the Oscar Peterson Grant for Jazz Performance, a prestigious award given to one student each year from across Canada.
After joining the Shuffle Demon’s I decided to continue to expand myself musically and personally by moving to Berlin. I started the band KWARTS with Béla Meinberg, Nathan Ott and Louis Navarro, and am I involved in several other projects in the city.
In Toronto, my band features Mingjia Chen, Ewen Farncombe, Sean Clarey, Scott Hunter and Austin Gembora. We have an EP released entitled BENDING LIGHT. Check it out on Bandcamp!
I am currently spending my time composing new music, collaborating with friends, practicing, and teaching online lessons.
I offer online lessons!
Over the past 12 years of being a professional musician I have developed a unique approach to practicing. My goal is to always get better; to work on my sound, improve my technique and learn more music.
As a saxophonist, I will share with you my unique approach to sound development, working on time and how to learn new music.
As a composer I will discuss my composition techniques, why I write music and how it impacts me as a performer.
As a jazz musician I can teach you the inner workings of jazz harmony and theory, how it informs all types of popular music, so that you can learn any piece of music only by listening.
I have been teaching privately for over ten years. I have a degree in jazz performance from Humber College in Toronto, Canada, and have received many prestigious awards as a saxophonist.
