What you will learn

Developed sound and control throughout the full range of the saxophone, increased dynamic range, understanding of the harmonics of the saxophone, all major and jazz minor scales full range of the instrument.

I will teach you how to practice, so that it becomes a sustainable part of your own daily/weekly routine. In this course, I’ve simplified practicing down to what I consider the core fundamentals: Sound and Technique. Once you have a good grasp of these two concepts you will be ready to take on any other musical challenges you wish to pursue.

Sound

Sound is at the centre of every musician’s identity. Working on your sound is the most personal and impactful way to develop as a musician.

Each lesson begins with longtone and overtone exercises I have personally developed over the past 10 years of practice to better connect with the saxophone and help you to develop a rich, warm sound full of harmonics.

Technique

Having good technique means being able to fully express yourself with your instrument. In order to do this, we need to build a strong connection with the instrument using the harmonic language we wish to play with. In western music, this means major and minor scales.

We will focus on one scale per day, playing it slowly through the full range of the horn and in 8 different patterns. This is a slow process, but by the end of the 24 lessons you will feel really comfortable reading and playing every major and minor scale.

A little bit every day

You don’t need to practice until your hands fall off to become a great musician. 30 min of focused practice every day goes a long way.

This course is not only going to teach you how to play, it will show you how to practice. As a musician, the time you spend practicing your instrument is a sacred. It can be a daunting task to practice every day, but when you know exactly what to practice and how, it becomes so much easier and your goals become reachable.

Course FAQ

  • Unlike other music masterclasses or online courses, I will be playing every part of this course with you, much like an instructional fitness video. All you have to do is play along with me!

  • 4 to 5 weeks, if you do 5 or 6 classes per week. You can take as long as you like with it, but I suggest to not focus on playing everything perfectly, just work through each class and do your best :)

  • I designed with course with the “inspired beginner” in mind. This means someone who has a beginner level of music study and wants to take their study to the next level. If you are a beginner send me a message on my contact form and we can set up some 1 on 1 lessons!

  • This course works best with tenor and soprano. However, it will also work great with alto and baritone, with the bonus of practicing your tuning of 4th and 5ths.
